Claim Risk

The Claim Risk feature helps merchants identify potentially fraudulent claims by analyzing various signals and patterns across customer behavior. When enabled, Corso automatically evaluates each claim and assigns a risk level to help you prioritize which claims may need additional review.

Corso analyzes multiple factors to calculate a risk score for each claim. Each factor contributes points to an aggregate score, with higher scores indicating greater risk. The system requires multiple signals to align before flagging claims as high risk, reducing false positives.

Email Activity

  • Tracks how frequently an email address has been used for claims at your store (store-level tracking)
  • Monitors email usage across all merchants on Corso (global tracking)
  • Identifies accounts with abnormally high claim volumes within recent timeframes

Device Fingerprinting (High Reliability Signal)

  • Detects when the same device is used to file claims across multiple email addresses
  • Identifies devices filing claims at multiple merchants
  • Requires multiple suspicious signals to trigger (prevents false positives from legitimate customers)
  • More aggressive thresholds due to reliability - device fingerprints are difficult to fake

IP Address Patterns (Moderate Reliability Signal)

  • Monitors IP addresses used across multiple accounts and merchants
  • Detects datacenter IPs, VPN usage, and known malicious addresses
  • More conservative thresholds to account for shared networks (offices, families, coffee shops)
  • Cross-merchant activity from the same IP is weighted more heavily

Media Reuse Detection

  • Checks if uploaded photos or videos have been used in previous claims
  • Exact match detection across all claims in the system
  • Strong indicator of coordinated fraud when detected

Order Verification

  • Claims tied to verified Shopify orders receive lower risk scores
  • Unverified registrations receive slightly elevated scores
  • Helps distinguish legitimate purchases from potential fraud

Merchant-Created Claims

  • Claims created by your staff receive lower risk scores
  • Claims created by customers receive slightly elevated scores
  • Recognizes that merchant-initiated claims are typically legitimate

Platform Risk Signals

  • Integrates fraud analysis from Shopify and other e-commerce platforms
  • Incorporates recommendations like ACCEPT, INVESTIGATE, or CANCEL
  • Platform “CANCEL” recommendations are treated as critical risk signals

Advanced Fingerprint Analysis

  • Bot detection (identifies malicious automated behavior)
  • AI-based suspect scores from fingerprinting technology
  • VPN and proxy detection with confidence levels
  • Timezone mismatches and datacenter IP detection

Claims are categorized into three risk levels based on their aggregate score:

  • Low Risk: Minimal fraud indicators, safe to process normally
  • Medium Risk: Moderate fraud indicators, review recommended before processing
  • High Risk: Strong fraud indicators, hold for investigation before proceeding

Some signals (like media reuse, malicious bots, or platform CANCEL recommendations) can immediately escalate a claim to critical status requiring manual review.

  • Fraud Prevention: Identify suspicious patterns before processing claims
  • Prioritized Workflow: Focus your attention on claims that need additional review
  • Pattern Detection: Catch organized fraud rings that operate across multiple stores
  • Legitimate Customer Protection: Reduce friction for customers with clean claim histories
